Flowers!

Picture 3353Picture 3359Picture 3341Fernwood is known for its shade-loving perennials. People will often make a special trip to find some of the native and woodland plants we grow. After all, we are ‘Maine’s Shadiest Nursery’. On any given day, a customer may visit the nursery and go home with a gold edged crinkled leaf hosta, a Lobelia cardinalis, and maybe a trillium or two (for an example). We have rows and rows of carefully selected plants to choose from for shade and woodland. Years of work has gone into the selecting and propagation of the plants we grow.
But, I must say, if you look across the nursery towards the vegetable gardens and areas with more open space, you’ll a see a swath of sun-loving non-natives…poppies galore, an army of foxglove, oodles of borage, chamomile, and calendula, patches of delphiniums and dahlias, roses and peonies, not to mention the dill and cilantro and fennel…all of which make their home quite happily right along side the vegetables. Why not? It’s flower love out there! It’s a bouquet picking bonanza! Every day I go and clip a few bunches, large and small, so each room in the house gets their own cheery and often fragrant arrangement. I’ll finish this post by just saying this…..” all these flowers bring me (shade and no shade) so MUCH joy!!! Picture 3397Picture 3365Picture 3399

    • Thank you, veronica. These beauties are fleeting….a seasons’s worth and then the cycle starts all over again. Always so glad to pay close attention to these summer delights. Hope you are having a wonderful, wonderful summer!

  1. It’s such a gorgeous time of year isn’t it? Your flowers are exquisite. Judy’s right, it’s going to be a scorcher today. I’m already looking forward to icy watermelon for lunch.

    • They were originally planted…one variety being’Danish Flag’ another a lighter pink ( can’t remember the name) and the have self sowed ever since. Of course they are probably cross pollinating now and I am getting different shades…all lovely, though.I can’t quite get myself to thin them much during the early spring….always so glad I didn’t when they are in full bloom! I can send you seed later in the season if you’d like? Denise

      • Denise – While that sounds lovely, in reality, I have no gardens yet, only sandy gravel and few raised beds for the veggies. But I have plans and dreams and will remember that you have those beauties. I scattered a ton of poppy seeds one year, and got a few very weak results, and none came back the next year, so I know they need slightly better conditions. Meanwhile, you keep taking those photos, and I will get over there to see them someday. My mom visited you a few weeks ago, I heard all about it after the fact. I told her that I read the blog and she got all excited “Yes, she told me she writes one. Show me how to read it. ” Which I will do next time I get near her computer. 🙂

        • Just let me know when you ready for poppy seeds, whenever that is, I’ll send you the seed and spread the love! So glad your mom came by and certainly show her the blog. Happy day to you, denise
